Where do I start? Well, I have a treadmill now. BUT before you roll your eyes and think this is another unrealistic-run-until-you-pass-out blog post give me a chance.
What changed in my fitness life since getting a treadmill?
I started telling myself to just walk on the treadmill for 5-10 minutes every morning. It’s seriously that simple, but let me explain some more before you think that walking for 5-10 minutes is going to make you lose 50 pounds like me – it won’t.
Lately I’ve opted to walk for 15 minutes in the morning, but sometimes I get bored and I stop at 10 minutes, or I just don’t feel like walking so I stop at 5 minutes. Here’s what I didn’t expect – when I walk for 15 minutes in the morning, I get about 1,000 steps done! Sometimes more, sometimes less – it depends on how fast I walk. Usually I walk between 1.5 – 2.5, but it depends on how sore I feel, tired, motivated, and my general mood. I also typically keep the incline between 8-10, but it depends on how sore my legs are.
Before the treadmill, I would have around 500-900 steps in the first 1-2 hours of waking up. I have no idea what the average is, but I felt like I could be doing better. After getting the treadmill, I reach around 2,000 steps within the first 1-2 hours of being awake! It’s fucking awesome!
On top of walking for a little bit in the morning, I try to walk for 5-10 minutes before and after my workouts to warm up and cool down. When I warm up, I aim for a 9-10 incline and a 2-2.5 speed, with a 1 minute jog at 4mph just to get the blood flowing. When I’m trying to cool down, I change the incline to 8 and walk around 1.8-2mph, unless I’m feeling energetic and then I’ll walk at 2.5mph.
Regardless, the point is I am loving the treadmill (I never thought I’d say that)! It has honestly changed the game in terms of my daily calorie burn, morning routine, and workouts. Obviously, you don’t need a treadmill to achieve a higher daily calorie burn, you can just walk laps around your house, apartment, or town/neighborhood if the weather is nice!
I just notice it really helps me wake up in the morning and get the blood flowing when I wake up and immediately walk for 10-15 minutes. It sets the tone for the day, and it doesn’t require killing myself by running! I still hate running, but walking is more manageable because it doesn’t feel like a punishment and I can easily get lost on Instagram or Pinterest on my phone while I do it! Or you can watch youtube videos, Netflix, or anything! Hopefully this inspires you to try some sort of activity in the morning or in general – it honestly makes a difference!
