How Much Cardio Is Needed to Lose Weight? Shredding for the Wedding

Cardio is a tool

The secret to weight loss is being in a calorie deficit. Just burn more calories than you eat! Or eat less calories than you burn! Cardio is just a tool to create the deficit.

Every once in a while I do little challenges where I do 20-30 minutes of cardio every day for an extended amount of time. Recently I did a challenge in October all the way until Thanksgiving, but after that I just made sure to hit 10,000-20,000 steps per day.

Less is more

Since starting shredding for the wedding, I started doing cardio once a week (sometimes twice if I feel like it). Typically I do anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour on the treadmill walking at an incline, or on the elliptical, or stairs, or any other aerobic machine at the gym. Some days I watch TV or youtube videos, other days I just listen to music and scroll Instagram or Pinterest. On some days I’d split my cardio and do 10 minutes per machine or 15 or 20 minutes etc. You get the point, I try to change it up so I don’t get bored.

The important part

For the most part, I eat about 1500-1800 calories every day and I make sure to get my daily steps in and lift. I still lose about 1 pound every week! Cardio isn’t necessary to lose weight.

I don’t have to do cardio to lose weight, but it definitely keeps my calorie deficit large enough so I can eat more food and still lose weight.
